I feel so mad that this racist book sells in New Zealand bookshops.
There is no cover up?, Maori have nothing to gain from a cover up.
Its just another excuse to call Maori Primitive and Violent and feel better about stealing their land.
Even claiming that the Koru in their designs has been stolen from the CELTS? It appears in Nature, it symbolises new life and new beginnings just like a new fern frond.
How offensive this book is, shame to the Bookshops peddling this anti MAORI racist drivel.

Typhoid Mary was a case study when I studied environmental health in England in the early 1970s. At that time typhoid was common (but less so than its “cousin” salmonella food poisoning) and, for a while, became more common as cheap foreign holidays became available.
This review has me wanting to read the book and get more of a feel for the historical context.
Thank you!

Great review Steve! I think we are lucky in New Zealand that so many Kiwis seem to value much more than just money. Still, we have to be wary of governments who will sneak or rush through policies aimed at creating NZ Inc instead of nurturing the Aotearoa/New Zealand that is well-rounded and full of opportunities for various visions of the good life.

I think having an open mind and thinking outside of accepted norms is a prerequisite to advancing education and opportunity. I can understand why it happens but disparaging remarks and put downs do little to assist in the process. I am of English and European origins and stopped attending University in NZ 1987 after I heard the most appalling put downs from a sociologist such as " We don't have to take our lead (in NZ) from a turd of a little country that sits at the top of the map (England).
And I saw preferential marking and treatment based on race. How can this kind of attitude possibly further the truth in academic or any other kind of research?
It may help to keep in mind that it was an "amateur" fossil hunter that discovered the fossilized bones of therapod dinasaurs in NZ when all the professionals "knew" that they did not exist

Good to see Ngapuhi elder David Rankin pitching tribal history against the academic taliban that foolishly thinks it can dictate to a people what their history will be.
Thanks Greg. Yesterday I was reading a magazine article (nothing to do with sport) with a photo showing the front page of The Sydney Morning Herald from, I think, early 2012. Tucked in beneath the Herald's banner was a box highlighting a sports feature in that issue: "What Thorpe is doing wrong". It kind of underlined for me the everyday pressure the guy must face. Jim
